Where Broken Things Find Their Way Back Home

         Repair Café Willowdale

The Art of Repairing What Cannot Be Replaced

 Dear readers,

Have you ever noticed how quickly we give up on broken things—sometimes faster than we should? Well… this story might gently change your mind.

There are places you visit… and then there are places that stay with you.

Repair Café Willowdale is one of those rare spaces.

Repair Café Willowdale emerged from one of the early Climate Action Roundtables led by Councillor Lily Cheng, rooted in a shared vision for practical, community-driven sustainability. Since its inception in August 2025, it has grown into a dynamic network of over 80 dedicated volunteers. In just three events, the initiative has already diverted approximately 295 kilograms of material from landfill while saving the community thousands in replacement costs—demonstrating how small, collective actions can lead to meaningful environmental and economic impact.

At first, it may look like a room filled with tools, wires, fabrics, and people leaning over broken items. But if you take a moment—just a moment—you begin to see something deeper unfolding. This is not just about fixing what is broken. It is about restoring meaning in a world that has slowly learned to replace instead of repair.

Where Repair Becomes Something More

We often underestimate the emotional weight of the things we own.

A sweater is not just fabric—it may carry the warmth of someone we love.

A small object, forgotten by the world, may still hold an entire lifetime for someone.

Carefully restoring a loose arm on an old baby doll—quietly safeguarded decades of cherished memories for its owner. In that moment, it became clear that Repair Café is not merely about fixing objects, but about preserving the threads of personal history—honouring the emotional continuity that lives within the things we hold dear.

One story shared by Lottie stayed with me deeply. An elderly visitor brought in a baby doll—its arm had come loose. A simple repair, technically speaking. But once it was restrung and restored, what returned was not just a doll—it was decades of memory, comfort, and continuity.

That is the quiet magic of Repair Café Willowdale.

Small repairs. Deeply human impact.

That story stayed with me… perhaps because, in my own way, I understood it all too well.

I lost my mother, and ever since, I find myself holding on to the smallest things that still carry her presence. One of them is a scarf of hers that I often keep close. It has quietly become something I reach for—not out of habit, but out of longing.

I remember someone once saying to me, with a lighthearted observation, “You always dress so well, and you have such a beautiful collection of clothes… but I’ve noticed you repeat that same scarf quite often. You should get a few more.”

I smiled. Gently.

And in that moment, I realized something deeper than what words could easily hold.

I told them, “You’ve just made me realize how much I miss my mother… because I tend to carry this scarf a little more on the days I miss her a little more.”

Because this scarf is not just fabric.

It is warmth that feels familiar.

It is comfort that feels like home.

It is, in its quiet way, her arms still wrapped around me—her prayers, her blessings, resting gently around my neck.

And that is why the story of that repaired doll felt so personal.

Because sometimes, what we choose to hold onto is not defined by its material worth—but by the love it carries.

No luxury piece, no matter how beautiful, can replace the comfort of something that holds your memories. Sometimes, the most worn, the most ordinary-looking things are the ones that carry the deepest parts of our hearts.

And in those moments, repair is no longer just about fixing an object.

It becomes an act of preserving love.

The Heart of It All: Lottie

When I met Lottie, I understood immediately that this initiative is not accidental—it is deeply personal.

An exceptionally intelligent woman with a strong scientific background, she sees repair as both a creative practice and an extension of curiosity—an exploration of how things work, and how they can be brought back to life.

But beyond her intellect lies something even more powerful—her heart.

When I asked her what inspired this journey, she spoke about her grandmother, a seamstress who used to repair things for the family. As she shared those memories, her voice softened, her eyes filled with emotion—and in that moment, everything made sense.

Right beside her was Luc—her husband—quietly, warmly offering comfort. It was such a simple yet powerful moment to witness. Not dramatic, not staged—just real.

That moment stayed with me.

Because it revealed that Repair Café Willowdale is not just built on skills or systems.

It is built on love, memory, and legacy.

Luc himself plays an integral role—bringing in design expertise, technical support, and a calm, steady presence. Together, they are not just leading an initiative; they are nurturing something meaningful.

    The Strength of a Community

What makes Repair Café Willowdale truly remarkable is its people.

Each volunteer brings not just a skill—but a spirit.

There is JJ—whose kindness quietly defines what it means to serve. You will always find him ready to help, stepping in wherever needed, often taking on the hardest tasks without hesitation. Whether within Repair Café or beyond, JJ is someone who simply shows up—for people. And when we talk about the impact of helping others, the kind that spreads warmth and hope—you see it reflected in him.

Paul, leading electronics (and even stepping into jewelry when needed), represents that classic “fixer” spirit—curious, thoughtful, and always ready with solutions. For him, Repair Café beautifully intersects environmental responsibility, hands-on work, and community building.

After our second very successful event at the library, we knew that our first event was not a fluke and decided to get together at the Frog and Firkin on Yonge Street to celebrate. Sharing food and adult beverages in a relaxed, party atmosphere helped friendships blossom and they continue today. That’s when I knew we were not just a team but a community of friends.

 - Paul Honis

Luc, leading the tech side, ensures that modern-day challenges are met with patience and expertise—quietly solving problems that many of us wouldn’t even know where to begin with.

Sally, a pillar of the sewing team, brings both skill and care to textile repair—preserving not just clothing, but the memories woven into them.

Greg, leading bike repairs, contributes to a more sustainable and active community—one wheel at a time.

Behind the scenes, there is just as much brilliance.

Siobhan, as lead scheduler, ensures that everything—and everyone—comes together at the right time.

Eve, leading registration, has helped shape a smoother, more welcoming experience for every visitor who walks in.

Jane, managing the exit station, ensures that every repair ends with clarity, closure, and often a smile.

We worked together on a vision with greater efficiency and direction. Through many meetings, we discussed possibilities, and expressed our opinions. We learned about one another, and shared a genuine interest knowing and respecting each other. We collaborated in this diversity,  inspiring and supporting one another. The team was no longer just a team with a cause, we became friends with mutual interests."  - Jane Wong

Jenn, deeply involved in coordination and planning, carries a warmth that reflects in everything she does. She often reminds us that what makes this initiative special is not just the repair—it’s the people coming together, the shared effort, and the sense of belonging it creates.

When I asked Jenn if there was a moment that stood out to her during a Repair Café event, she shared a particularly meaningful one—watching a parent and child documenting the event for a school project. What made it special was not just the filming, but the energy they carried: the parent visibly delighted that such an initiative existed within their community, and the child equally captivated, immersed in a vibrant room filled with neighbours working together, helping one another, and creating something quietly extraordinary.
She also recalled receiving a deeply heartfelt email from an attendee—one filled with gratitude, sharing how the Repair Café had felt like a true blessing in their life. Moments like these gently affirm that the impact of this work extends far beyond the repairs themselves.

In my experience, Jenn carries a quiet strength—grounded, sensible, and deeply thoughtful. She approaches her work with intelligence and care, and has that rare warmth that makes you feel as though you’ve known her for years.

And then there is Lu—from the office of  Councillor Lily Cheng.

I’ve had the privilege of knowing Lu personally, and I can say this with complete sincerity—she brings a rare kind of warmth into every space she steps into. I have seen the way people appreciate her, the way they thank her—not just for what she does, but for how she makes them feel. There is a kindness and attentiveness in her approach that cannot be taught. Her support to Repair Café Willowdale has been both meaningful and heartfelt, and it shows in the way she connects with people and uplifts the work around her.

And of course, there are many more—each contributing in their own way, each playing a role in shaping what this initiative has become.

Because Repair Café Willowdale is not built by one person.

It is built by everyone who chooses to care.

A Quiet Revolution for the Planet

While the emotional impact of Repair Café is undeniable, its environmental contribution is equally powerful.

We are living in a time where perfectly repairable items are discarded without a second thought, and landfills continue to grow at an alarming pace.

Repair Café Willowdale challenges that pattern.

Every item repaired is one less item in the landfill.

Every skill shared is a step toward sustainability.

What began as a small, community-led effort has already diverted significant waste—and more importantly, it is shifting mindsets.

It reminds us that sustainability does not always begin with large systems or policies.

Sometimes, it begins with a simple decision—to fix, rather than throw away.

From Volunteers to Something More

What starts as volunteering here rarely stays that way.

People come together for a cause—but they stay for the connection.

Conversations turn into friendships.

Shared effort turns into shared laughter.

I’ve seen how this group gathers beyond the events—how they celebrate, connect, and simply enjoy being around each other. Somewhere along the way, they stop being just a team.

They become a community.

An Invitation

If you’ve ever wondered how you can contribute—this is your sign.

You don’t need to be an expert.

You don’t need to have all the answers.

If you have skills—this is a place to share them.

If you don’t—this is a place to learn.

And if nothing else—this is a place where your presence matters.

A Personal Reflection

Being part of Repair Café Willowdale feels like stepping into something deeply meaningful.

I feel privileged to be part of a community that not only repairs objects—but restores faith in people, in kindness, and in collective effort.

And I am genuinely excited to contribute in every way I can.

Because in a world that moves fast and forgets easily,

this is a place that chooses to pause… and care.

In a world facing climate uncertainty, perhaps the most powerful change begins not with grand solutions, but with small, conscious choices—like choosing to repair, to reuse, and to care a little more than before.

Repair Café Willowdale is not just repairing things.

It is quietly repairing the way we live, connect, and care for our world.

“Every item we choose to repair is a quiet promise to the planet—that we are willing to care, conserve, and act with intention.”

This is truly a powerful and beautifully written piece. You don’t just write, you move hearts. The way you connect something as simple as repair to memory, love, and human connection is rare and deeply meaningful.

Your storytelling carries both depth and grace, it invites the reader not just to see, but to feel. The personal reflection about your mother and the scarf is especially touching; it transforms this from a story into a lived experience that many can relate to, even in their own quiet ways.

What stands out most is your ability to elevate ordinary moments into something sacred. You’ve shown that impact is not always loud, it can be gentle, intentional, and still profoundly transformative.
You are building more than a blog—you are building a voice that inspires, heals, and awakens people to care more deeply. That is a gift.
Keep writing. Keep telling these stories. The world needs this kind of perspective, one that reminds us that even in brokenness, there is beauty, meaning, and the possibility of restoration.

Thank you, truly. Your words were written with such beauty, tenderness, and depth that I had to pause and read them more than once.
The way you expressed your thoughts felt poetic in itself—so thoughtful, generous, and deeply sincere. It means a great deal to me that the heart behind my writing was felt so clearly and received with such sensitivity.

What you wrote about memory, love, human connection, and the quiet power of restoration touched me deeply. To know that the story resonated with you in that way is a gift.

Thank you as well for seeing not just the blog, but the intention behind it. Your comment was incredibly affirming and encouraging, and I’m genuinely grateful for the grace and care with which you shared your reflections.
