Building Better Futures for Kids: When Compassion Becomes a Calling

Image
A Conversation That Stayed With Me Some conversations stay with us long after they end. I experienced one of those conversations in February when I had the privilege of meeting Kelly Le, Founder and President of Better Futures for Kids Foundation. As she shared the story behind the organization, I found myself deeply moved—not only by what the foundation has accomplished, but by the heart, resilience, and purpose that inspired its creation. Those who follow my writing know that I am especially drawn to stories that place children at the center. The Children I Cannot Afford to Forget Throughout my years of humanitarian work and ministry, I have spent time with children living in poverty, children who have experienced abuse, neglect, abandonment, and unimaginable trauma. I have sat with children whose innocence was stolen far too early. I have listened to stories that still linger in my heart years later. I have seen how poverty can rob a child of opportunities, confidence, safety, a...

Our Children Are Not Content: Why We Must Stop Glorifying Teen Crime in Media

Image
Dear reader — whether you are a parent, a teacher, a grandparent, an older sibling, or simply someone who cares about the kind of world we are building for the next generation — this letter is for you. What I am about to share with you has kept me up at night. It has moved me to speak out. And I hope, with everything I have, that it moves you too. I want to talk about something that has been quietly, steadily, and dangerously normalizing itself into the daily lives of our children: the media that glorifies, dramatizes, and profits from teenage crime. I am not talking about educational documentaries that hold systems accountable, or thoughtful dramas that explore why young people struggle. I am talking about the shows that make gang life look glamorous. The social media videos that rack up millions of views showing teenagers fighting, brandishing weapons, and committing crimes — filmed, shared, and monetized as entertainment. The true-crime specials that turn real juvenile offenders int...

NeighbourLink Is Cooking Something Big — Taste of North York Is Back (And You’re Invited)

Image
Dear North York community, weekend procrastinators, food lovers, and those who say “we’ll decide later” as if later has ever been reliable. I come to you today with urgency, affection, and very good suggestions. Because from June 5–7 , Mel Lastman Square becomes the place where sensible plans are cancelled and better ones begin: Taste of North York Community & Food Festival . Last year, I volunteered all three days from beginning to end . And by beginning to end, I mean: setup while the square was still waking up greeting people as they arrived helping backstage photography assisting wherever needed smiling through mild exhaustion teardown when everyone else had gone home and only the true believers remained So no, I’m not speaking as a casual observer. I’m speaking as someone who has seen this event from the glamorous side… and the side involving extension cords. Snapshot from last year’s event!  First up- a sea of people soaking in the Persian music vibes. ...

Where Broken Things Find Their Way Back Home

Repair Café Willowdale The Art of Repairing What Cannot Be Replaced   Dear readers, Have you ever noticed how quickly we give up on broken things—sometimes faster than we should? Well… this story might gently change your mind. There are places you visit… and then there are places that stay with you. Repair Café Willowdale is one of those rare spaces. Repair Café Willowdale emerged from one of the early Climate Action Roundtables led by Councillor Lily Cheng, rooted in a shared vision for practical, community-driven sustainability. Since its inception in August 2025, it has grown into a dynamic network of over 80 dedicated volunteers. In just three events, the initiative has already diverted approximately 295 kilograms of material from landfill while saving the community thousands in replacement costs—demonstrating how small, collective actions can lead to meaningful environmental and economic impact. At first, it may look like a room filled ...

When Silence Hurts More Than Words: A Heartfelt Reflection for the Iranian Community

Image
Dear readers, It feels strange to begin this blog, because some stories don’t begin with words—they begin with a weight in the heart. For the past while, I have been quietly observing something I cannot ignore anymore. It’s not loud. It’s not always visible. But it’s there—in the eyes, in the pauses, in the forced smiles of people around me. Especially among members of the Iranian community here in Canada. There is a kind of pain that doesn’t scream. It sits. It waits. It breathes inside you. And that is the pain I have been witnessing. A Distance That Is Not Measured in Miles Many Iranians living abroad today are carrying a burden that most of us cannot fully understand. It is not just the distance from home—it is the uncertainty, the fear, and the helplessness of not being able to reach loved ones. At various times over the past years, there have been disruptions and restrictions on internet access inside Iran, especially during periods of unrest. For families living outside th...

Let’s Move Willowdale!

Image
Dear readers, There are some community events you attend once… and then there are some that quietly become part of your life. The kind you don’t just go to, but feel connected to. For me, NeighbourLink North York sits firmly in that second category. There’s a soul-level connection there — and I don’t say that lightly. I’ve been part of many NeighbourLink events since their earlier days, long before they became as beautifully big and bustling as they are now. I’ve watched them grow, evolve, and still somehow stay deeply human at the core. Let’s Move, Willowdale is one of those events I’ve personally been part of from its early days — and every year, it feels less like an “event” and more like a seasonal marker in my life. If spring had a heartbeat in Willowdale, this would be it! This year, NeighbourLink North York is once again partnering with the North York Seniors Centre for the 5th annual Let’s Move, Willowdale Move-a-thon & BBQ, happening on Saturday, May 2nd at Hendon ...
