Building Better Futures for Kids: When Compassion Becomes a Calling
A Conversation That Stayed With Me
Some conversations stay with us long after they end.
I experienced one of those conversations in February when I had the privilege of meeting Kelly Le, Founder and President of Better Futures for Kids Foundation. As she shared the story behind the organization, I found myself deeply moved—not only by what the foundation has accomplished, but by the heart, resilience, and purpose that inspired its creation.
Those who follow my writing know that I am especially drawn to stories that place children at the center.
The Children I Cannot Afford to Forget
Throughout my years of humanitarian work and ministry, I have spent time with children living in poverty, children who have experienced abuse, neglect, abandonment, and unimaginable trauma. I have sat with children whose innocence was stolen far too early. I have listened to stories that still linger in my heart years later. I have seen how poverty can rob a child of opportunities, confidence, safety, and sometimes even hope.
Yet I have also witnessed something equally powerful.
I have seen a single caring teacher change a child’s future.
I have seen a mentor become a lifeline.
I have seen communities rally around vulnerable families.
And I have seen organizations become the bridge between despair and possibility.
That is why the work of Better Futures for Kids Foundation resonated with me so deeply.
According to UNICEF and international anti-trafficking organizations, millions of children around the world continue to face exploitation, trafficking, forced labour, abuse, and barriers to education. Behind every statistic is a child with dreams, talents, untapped potential, and a future worth fighting for.
When Gratitude Becomes a Mission
Founded in Ontario, Better Futures for Kids is a volunteer-led charitable organization committed to creating brighter futures for vulnerable children. While many organizations focus on addressing immediate needs, Better Futures for Kids takes a holistic approach—supporting education, addressing poverty, preserving cultural heritage, raising awareness about human trafficking, and investing in opportunities that empower children and strengthen communities.
“A better future is never built in grand moments alone—it begins quietly, when someone chooses not to look away from a child who needed them to stay.”
- Ruby Dalvina
More Than a Board of Directors: A Team United by Purpose
At the heart of this mission is Kelly Le’s own remarkable journey.
Born in Vietnam, Kelly spent part of her early childhood in a refugee camp in Malaysia before arriving in Canada at the age of five. Years later, when she returned to Vietnam, she encountered a reality that left a lasting imprint on her heart. She witnessed children living in extreme poverty and learned of young lives vulnerable to exploitation and trafficking.
For many people, such an experience would be heartbreaking.
For Kelly, it became life-changing.
Grateful for the opportunities Canada had given her, she felt a responsibility to give back. What began as a personal mission soon evolved into something much larger. Year after year, she returned to support children and families facing significant challenges. Each encounter strengthened her resolve and eventually led to the creation of Better Futures for Kids Foundation—a community of passionate individuals united by a common belief that every child deserves safety, dignity, education, and the opportunity to dream.
What impressed me most was learning that this organization was built by people whose own life experiences shaped their desire to serve.

Fighting Poverty Before It Becomes Vulnerability
As I learned more about Better Futures for Kids, I became increasingly inspired by the scope of their impact.
The foundation has supported educational initiatives, humanitarian projects, community development efforts, assistance for orphanages, support for children with special needs, charitable housing projects, and programs designed to improve the lives of vulnerable children and families. Their volunteers have helped provide resources, opportunities, and hope where it is needed most.
Education: The Gift That Keeps Opening Doors
Education remains one of the organization’s strongest priorities.
The team understands that while charity can address today’s challenges, education can transform tomorrow. When children gain access to learning, mentorship, and opportunity, they gain far more than knowledge—they gain confidence, independence, and the ability to create a better future for themselves and future generations.
Another aspect of their work that I find particularly meaningful is their commitment to preserving culture while strengthening community. Through educational and cultural programs, children and families have opportunities to explore music, art, creativity, leadership, and heritage. These experiences help foster confidence, belonging, and personal growth.
Turning Awareness Into Action
The foundation is also a passionate advocate for raising awareness about human trafficking and child exploitation—issues that often remain hidden in plain sight. Awareness alone cannot solve these challenges, but awareness is where change begins. Conversations create understanding. Understanding inspires action. Action saves lives.
Celebrating Culture While Changing Lives
One of the ways Better Futures for Kids engages the community is through its fundraising and cultural events.

Many people may recognize the organization through the popular Taste of Vietnam Festival, which has become much more than a celebration of food and culture. It has become a platform for community connection, education, advocacy, and philanthropy.
The foundation has also organized Taste of South East Asia events, Moon Festival celebrations, Ao Dai Day initiatives, community awareness campaigns, and numerous fundraising activities that bring people together while supporting meaningful causes.
These events are far more than celebrations.
They create opportunities for education.
They build bridges between communities.
They raise awareness.
They inspire generosity.
Most importantly, they transform compassion into action.
This year, the foundation continues to expand its impact through community events, partnerships, and fundraising initiatives that support vulnerable children while strengthening cultural connections and public awareness. Every volunteer hour, every sponsorship, every donation, and every ticket purchased helps move that mission forward.
Recognition Earned Through Service
What makes Better Futures for Kids especially remarkable is that its impact has been recognized far beyond the communities it directly serves.
Over the years, the foundation has received numerous certificates of appreciation, commendations, and formal recognition from respected leaders and institutions across Canada. Their work has been acknowledged by the Prime Minister of Canada, the Premier of Ontario, Members of Provincial Parliament, the Mayor of Toronto, and the City of Toronto.
While awards are never the reason people choose to serve, these recognitions tell an important story.
They represent years of dedication.
Thousands of volunteer hours.
Countless fundraising efforts.
Advocacy campaigns.
Humanitarian outreach.
Lives touched.
Communities strengthened.
Children empowered.
They stand as evidence that compassion, when paired with action and perseverance, can create meaningful and lasting change.
Why This Matters More Than Ever
As I reflect on everything I learned about Better Futures for Kids, I keep returning to one simple truth:
Every child deserves someone willing to believe in their future.
I have met children whose circumstances seemed overwhelming. I have listened to stories of hardship that no child should ever have to endure. Yet I have also witnessed the extraordinary resilience of young people when they are given support, encouragement, opportunity, and love.
The children I have met throughout my humanitarian journey have taught me many lessons. One of the most important is this:
Hope rarely arrives all at once.
It often comes through ordinary people who choose to care.
Better Futures for Kids is proof of that.
A group of dedicated individuals saw a need and chose to respond. Today, their compassion continues to open doors for children who deserve every opportunity to thrive.
If their story touches your heart as much as it touched mine, I encourage you to learn more, attend an event, volunteer, donate, sponsor a program, or simply share their mission with others.
Together, we can help ensure that more children have the chance to write a brighter chapter in their own story.

Because every child deserves more than survival.
Every child deserves the opportunity to flourish.
What Becomes of a Dream Deferred Child?
I often find myself thinking about the children the world never notices.
Not the ones standing on stages receiving awards.
Not the ones whose photographs fill family albums.
But the child sitting quietly at the edge of a crowded street.
The child carrying responsibilities that arrived years before adulthood.
The child whose dreams are no less beautiful, yet somehow far more difficult to reach.
There is something profoundly unjust about a world where a child’s future can be determined by circumstances they did not choose.
The place of their birth.
The poverty of their family.
The vulnerability of their surroundings.
The greed of those who see innocence not as something to protect, but something to exploit.
And yet, despite everything, children continue to dream.
Perhaps that is what moves me most.
A child who has known hunger still dreams of becoming a teacher.
A child who has witnessed hardship still imagines a better tomorrow.
A child who has every reason to give up still chooses hope.
What remarkable courage lives inside such small hearts.
Sometimes we speak of children as though they are merely the future.
But children are not only the future.
They are the present.
Their laughter matters now.
Their freedom matters now.
Their education matters now.
Their safety matters now.
Every day a child spends trapped in fear, exploitation, or neglect is a day that can never be returned.
Every dream postponed is a loss not only for that child, but for all of us.
Because somewhere inside that child may live an artist, a healer, a teacher, a leader, or simply a kind human being whose gifts the world desperately needs.
Perhaps the true measure of our humanity is found in how we respond to those who cannot protect themselves.
Whether we choose to look away.
Or whether we choose to care.
Whether we remain comfortable observers.
Or become guardians of possibility.
For every child carries within them a story still waiting to unfold.
And every act of compassion, every opportunity given, every child protected from harm becomes a declaration that their story matters.
That they matter.
And perhaps that is how better futures are truly built—
one child, one dream, and one courageous act of love at a time.
